Description
This panel will examine the opportunities and barriers for making models reliable tools and deliverables on construction projects. The current challenge is that – even though BIM is well established in our industry – we still don’t trust models or treat models as reliable means of conveying design and construction information. Documents represented as 2D PDFs are the predominant means of representing and transferring design and construction information. Models are provided on many projects for information only. Even though we are all very familiar and comfortable with drawings they may not be the ideal tool for representing design and construction information. Drawings can hide or ignore complexities and contain undetected inconsistencies in the design. Furthermore, drawings require a high degree of interpretation in order to apply the information contained in them to the project.

Learning Objectives
Demonstrate to their clients and colleagues the value of models used as contract deliverables
Understand the best practices and requirements involved in making a model a contractual deliverable
Determine the alignments and differences between requirements of Model as a deliverable from different stakeholders’ perspectives
Outline the necessary planning steps that need to occur from the outset of a project to properly define the expectations in being able to leverage a model as a contractual deliverable
Recorded live March 8, 2022.
Jim Bedrick, FAIA, is founder and principal of AEC Process Engineering and Senior Industry Advisor with Strategic Building Innovation (www.sbi.international) where he provides expertise on collaboration techniques and AECO industry needs, processes, and contract issues.
A registered architect, Jim holds degrees in Architecture and Electrical Engineering, and has over 40 years’ experience in the AEC industry on all three sides of the owner/architect/contractor triad. He has practiced architecture, directed technology for the construction and facilities management division of a global technology company, and led the development of Virtual Building and Integrated Project Delivery at Webcor Builders. Mr. Bedrick is active in many organizations working to advance collaborative tools and processes, including the American Institute of Architects, where he serves on the Contract Documents Committee and is a major contributor to Integrated Project Delivery, and the BIMForum, where he serves on the board of directors and co-chairs the LOD Specification committee.
Greg Gidez, FAIA FDBIA is the retired Corporate Director of Design Services for Hensel Phelps. Prior to joining Hensel Phelps in 2007 Mr. Gidez was a Principal with the Denver firm of Fentress Architects. As the senior design professional with Hensel Phelps, he oversees corporate design services including procurement, Design-Build, design-assist, and design management.
Mr. Gidez is a national speaker on integrated design and construction. He was the 2011 Chair of the Design Build Institute of America Board of Directors, where he started the Design Excellence awards program and the 2015 Chair and board member of the AIA Project Delivery Knowledge Community, where he founded the AIA PDKC’s annual Project Delivery Symposium, Delivering the Future.
In November of 2022 Mr. Gidez was presented with the Design Build Institute of America’s Brunelleschi Lifetime Leadership Award for recognition of his contributions to the industry. The Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest individual honor DBIA bestows.
He currently serves on the Charles Pankow Foundation Board of Directors, promoting research in advanced design and construction processes, and on the Board of Directors of the BIM Forum, promoting advancement and integration of technology in the studio and at the jobsite.
Carl has over 20 years of experience in the design and construction industry. Carl began his career with Fentress Architects as an Associate, job captain, and Design Technologies Manager. He then worked with FRCH Design Worldwide as the Director of Design Technologies. Carl was responsible for transitioning each companies’ design and production efforts to a Building Information Modeling (BIM) based workflow and improving each companies’ efficiency in of their workforce and for project deliverables. Carl joined Hensel Phelps in 2013. As a corporate VDC Manager for Hensel Phelps, Carl is responsible for expanding and improving project deliverables through training for existing and new software platforms as well as testing, approving, developing, and implementing new processes, standards, and software for all departments within the Hensel Phelps organization. Carl’s experiences in both the design and construction delivery methods has given him a wide-ranging perspective into the potential of design and construction data handover for facilities management and operations. His goal is to eliminate redundancy, rework, and data inaccuracies that typically lead to large delays for operations staff after project design and construction handover.
Heath May AIA is Principal and Director of HKS LINE (Laboratory for Intensive Exploration.) He leads a studio responsible for projects that have been recognized for progressive design with numerous awards. His work and research with LINE include data-driven design optimization, simulation, and digital design, fabrication, and delivery. Heath has taught advanced graduate design studio as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at University of Texas Arlington, CAPPA, School of Architecture. Student work from this Watershed Urbanism data visualization studio was displayed at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale, illustrating the complexity of urban watersheds through lenses of geology, hydrology, socioeconomics, politics, and climatology. A member of ACADIA (Association for Computer Aided Design In Architecture), Heath has led LINE in several recent academic research workshops focused on topology optimization and advanced computational workflows, partnering with notable structural engineering firms in a cross-disciplinary collaboration. Contributing to publications such as FABRICATE, Oz Journal, and Architect magazine on topics ranging from interdisciplinary collaboration, computational methodologies, and digital practice. In additional to teaching, Heath lectures often, with recent presentations at events such as the Design Futures Council of Design Intelligence, IBPSA (International Building Performance Simulation Association), and Facades+. Heath’s current funded research includes a US DOE grant where he is participating on a team researching and developing a Spatially-Tunable Beam-Steerable Lighting system with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute LESA (Lighting Enabled Systems and Applications) Center, case (Center for Architecture and Ecology), and industrial manufacturer Lumileds, Inc. Practicing across multiple sectors, recent projects featuring the design and/or collaboration of LINE include SoFi Stadium, Pacific Plaza Pavilion, and Alcon-Novartis Café. He currently practices in the California Bay Area, with a focus on collaborative digital design and delivery.
Jan Reinhardt is a Principal and Founder at ADEPT Project Delivery.
