Build America Summit: Philadelphia Hybrid
Bringing together constituencies to create new civic places
Join AIA, allied industry partners, and national thought leaders in a critical conversation to renew and rebuild America’s social infrastructure—the public buildings and spaces that are the heart of our communities.
The Build America Summit—hosted by AIA President Russell Davidson, FAIA—provides an unparalleled opportunity to develop critical recommendations for the future of America’s communities, cities, and towns. Add the power of your voice to this important exchange as we work together to define the challenges and develop solutions.
In a discussion moderated by Inga Saffron, architecture critic of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Dan McCoubrey, FAIA, and Lindsey Scannapieco share their experiences bringing together constituencies to create new civic places and the purpose, processes, challenges, and futures of their respective hybrid projects in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia is a city that has mastered the art of doing a lot with a little by applying creative solutions to meet the needs of its citizens. The two extreme hybrid projects discussed in this program—the South Philadelphia Health & Literacy Center and BOK—demonstrate how being civically-minded and open to bundling diverse users can create a versatile and singular public space that is both an asset to the community and something that might not exist otherwise.
- Understand the purpose and value of a hybrid approach to designing civic spaces.
- Explore many of the challenges and benefits of re-developing civic space for public-private use.
- Discuss how the success of a hybrid project relies heavily on communication, inclusion, transparency, and ownership among all stakeholders throughout the project and for the life of the space.
- Appreciate the challenges that exist in different communities and that there is not a one-size-fits-all hybrid solution.
