For 50 years, design centers have represented the frontlines of grassroots engagement in the architecture profession. What will design centers of the future look like?

Often serving as effective intermediary organizations, design centers have empowered communities to have a voice with their local governments and have built capacity and leadership in important ways. They've also served as an effective mechanism for volunteer architects to profoundly impact their communities.

This considers the continuing work of design centers as they adapt to new challenges while reinforcing their democratic mission in their communities.

Learning objectives

  • Analyze the important role design centers play in building equitable communities.
  • Explore how architects have utilized the design center model to deliver transformative change through democratic design methodologies.
  • Gain insights into key grassroots strategies being applied by design centers to adapt to critical urban issues that are emerging today.
  • Apply analysis and strategic thinking using community design methodology to consider key issues in their communities.
