Greg Mare, FAIA, ACHA and Mathew Grant, AIA, ACHA review the pop-up facilities that have been rolled out across the country in support of hospitals in preparation for a surge of COVID 19 patients. Emphasis will be on the evolving nature of the project type and lessons learned to be applied to the next pandemic.

Learning objectives

  • Review the process and programs by which state departments of health and the US Army Corps of Engineers approached the COVID 19 surge including site assessment and design for COVID and non-COVID patients. 
  • Review alternative care facilities based on converted facility type (arena, hotel, dorm, and convention center) and learn how they were designed to treat patients during the pandemic.  
  • Review operational requirements, beyond traditional facility design, to better understand the unique challenges in an alternative care facility such as diagnostic and treatment functions, service functions (food, supplies), and administrative functions. 
  • Review lessons learned from COVID 19 alternative care facilities and how they can be applied to future healthcare needs and future pandemics.
