The COVID-19 pandemic is forcing architects to reconsider many different aspects of commercial design. And ceiling and wall acoustics are no exception. For example, what does sound control look like for buildings in a post-COVID world, where social distancing creates new needs and spaces with new acoustical challenges, and disinfecting procedures call for more hard surfaces? This session will begin by exploring the principles of listening. Building from there, it will examine how architects can consider better listening and enhance acoustics from the start of a project to ensure quieter indoor environments that reduce stress and increase productivity, as well as how acoustics and aesthetics can go hand in hand.

Understand factors impacting acoustics as a result of changes in material/layout criteria to address cleanability, de-densification, physical/social distancing in this post-COVID time and how the environments may be designed with well-being of people in those environments.
Understand the negative effects of noise and solutions to lessen it as they design projects with acoustics in mind from the start.
Know the four steps to well-designed sound and two things that work together to create balanced sound.
Be aware of solutions currently available to enable positive experiences for human health and comfort in the built environment:
Panels that offer both sound blocking and sound absorption to offset additional hard surfaces
Understand new design options across material types to add sound absorption to your designs
