According to AARP, 90% of persons age 65 or older would prefer to stay in their current homes for as long as possible, and four out of five believe their current residence is where they’ll always live. Unfortunately, most homes are not functional for people with different abilities.
With the population of older homeowners continuing to grow, it’s more essential than ever for architects to understand and design kitchens for aging in place. This session will explore the need for kitchens with universal design, which are accessible for the greatest number of users no matter their ability or disability, the general design considerations that make a luxury kitchen suitable for all users, and the features in cooking and refrigeration appliances that are safe and accessible.
