Unpacking BIM Sharing Stigmas with Designers and Builders

Description:

In 2023, why is sharing a BIM still such a debated issue in project delivery? Certainly, the contractual silos of Design-Bid-Build play a role as compared to Design-Build, but if the efficiencies provide by BIM and VDC are so well documented, why are project teams so reluctant to share models without lengthy disclaimers that amount to nothing more than statements of “you can use it for reference, but you can’t rely any on it?” This session will provide insight from industry professionals about how construction technologies can be merged with project delivery to bridge the gap of the risk management (or avoidance) issues the industry faces, as well as share past challenges and successes of engaging VDC into early project conversations.

Learning objectives

  • Disrupt the stereotype of traditional roles of designer and builder, showing where a VDC Leader can drive value for the project.
  • Outline the value of early model-based collaboration to help all parties capitalize on the factors you can control to mitigate the overall project risk.
  • Illustrate the best practices for integrating VDC on Design-Build projects.
  • Define how models can provide transparency to the process and build trust between the Design-Build team around the owner’s vision.

This session was recorded live on March 7, 2023.
