Presented by winners of the AIA Film Challenge, Video Storytelling for Architects offers architects and design professionals the opportunity to explore the connection between architecture and storytelling, while developing practical video storytelling skills. In this five-part series, architects will be led (by filmmakers and architects) through the rewarding process of selecting, developing, producing, and promoting architecture stories.

Instructors
Francisco  López de Arenosa

Fascinated by all means of storytelling, Francisco understands the importance of narrative in design as well as the mechanics involved in business. To him, Marketing, Communications and Business Development are endeavors centered around design—requiring a creative, iterative, strategic and data-backed approach to succeed. Valerio Dewalt Train’s unique brand and voice is something that he attributes to a culture of innovation, as well as a highly talented, and collaborative team that’s housed within a design studio. It’s a continually evolving environment shaped by many—an aspect of the organization that he finds exciting and motivating to contribute to.

Joe Valerio

An award-winning architect, recognized for his creativity in project design, Joseph Valerio oversees the design development of all firm commissions. His portfolio, accumulated over a 30 year career, includes a wide variety of projects and numerous design awards. Higher education, corporate office, high-tech industrial, institutional, retail, health care, restaurant, residential and theater facilities are all represented.

John  Gordon

John is a director and editor based in Dallas, TX. He has a knack for creating fresh content by pulling inspiration from numerous industries and aims to challenge audiences by introducing them to untold stories, diverse cultures and new ways of thinking. John graduated from Full Sail University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Film and spent his following years in New York and Texas producing work for major brands including Calvin Klein, Fossil, GQ and The Huffington Post. He has also screened documentaries in the Cannes and SCAD film festivals and was the winner of the AIA Film Challenge 2020. John is currently the Co-Owner of The Modern Reel, a future focused production company that features projects which highlight the advancement of education, technology and architecture.

Emily  Teng Yan

Emily Teng Yan, AIA is an architect at OMNIPLAN in Dallas, Texas. She earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Architecture from the University of Cincinnati. She primarily focuses on the religious and civic projects. She is passionate about creating well-crafted buildings that focus on the community and place-making.

Brodie  Kerst

Brodie is a trained architect turned video storyteller. He graduated from UW-Milwaukee with his degree in architecture and soon after started his video production business, where he works with traditional and landscape architecture firms to help story tell their brands and their designs. His films have won the Honor and Presidents award in the ILASLA chapter along with the Grand Prize in the 2021 AIA Film Challenge.

Asia Taylor

Asia Marie Taylor is a filmmaker, editor, and creative. After 12 years in the industry, Taylor launched her own production company called TaylorLane Creative as tribute to both sides of her family name. TaylorLane Creative visualizes human stories and creates digital experiences that encourage audiences to act. When the pandemic hit in 2020, Taylor looked to keep busy and entered the AIA Film Challenge 2020. Her film, “Boxville: Creating a Just World” won third place in the competition. After the win, Taylor decided to continue the story of the film and produce her first feature-length documentary entitled, “Black Metropolis” which is currently still in production. Today Taylor is an entrepreneur, traveler, and dog mom. She is always on the hunt for a good story and creative ways to tell them.

Alex Michl

Having been with OPN Architects for the past 10 years, Alex has lent his talents in design and most recently expounding on visual media as OPN’s Multimedia Creative Strategist. Alex was born and raised in the midwest and obtained his Bachelor of Architecture from Iowa State University. He has a passion for design, integrated with his skills of digital imagery and presentation. One of his most recent accomplishments is the 2021 AIA Film Challenge People’s Choice Award winner with his film, “A Jewel in Appalachia”. With his Architecture background, and his craft in storytelling, he aims to the boundary of how the narrative of the built environment can impact all.

You’ve done your planning, and now you’re ready to film! In this third installment of Video Storytelling for Architects, Brodie Kerst, AIA Film Challenge 2021 Grand Prize Winner, explains equipment, how to frame camera shots, interview tips, and the importance of lighting and audio.

Post-production: Editing your Story

Building on production, post-production is where your story comes to life. Asia Taylor, AIA Film Challenge 2020 Third Place winner, shares editing tips, how to transcribe your interviews, and selecting the right music. Additionally, you will learn about what you can do with extra footage.
