Description
As climate hazards grow more frequent and severe, resilient design has become a professional, ethical, and business imperative. This course equips licensed architects with the frameworks, data, and strategies to address resilience through the lenses of risk management, long-term value, and economic opportunity.
Participants will learn to evaluate hazard risk based on ownership type and geography, communicate effectively with clients about exposure, and leverage cost-benefit analysis and financial incentives to support resilient outcomes. Real-world case studies, performance tools, and updated guidance from FEMA, NIBS, and ULI provide practical frameworks to help architects enhance life safety, reduce liability, and demonstrate the long-term value of resilient design.
Learning Objectives
Explain how hazard risk, building ownership, and performance expectations shape architectural decisions that protect occupant health and safety, improve building resilience, and support continuity of operations.
Identify how design decisions related to resilient strategies reduce risks to occupant health, life safety, and building functionality during and after hazards, and understand how these decisions influence professional responsibilities, liability, and insurance considerations.
Evaluate enhanced performance strategies using benefit-cost analysis, focusing on how resilient design measures safeguard occupant health and safety, maintain habitability during disruptions, and support long-term operational continuity.
Communicate the business case for resilience to clients and stakeholders by articulating how resilient design strategies protect occupant health and safety, support continuity of essential functions, and provide economic and performance benefits.
