Description

Creating environments that are functional, inclusive, and accessible starts with a clear understanding of AIA standards—and how to apply them effectively in real projects. This essential course provides architects a practical, comprehensive guide to implementing the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design in new construction.

From early planning through post-occupancy evaluation, you’ll learn how to identify applicable scoping requirements, integrate accessibility features into site and building design, and verify compliance in the field. Through detailed examples, checklists, and technical case studies, you’ll strengthen your ability to design accessible routes, entrances, restrooms, and service areas that meet both legal standards and user needs. By course completion, you’ll be ready to apply ADA and IBC requirements confidently, avoid costly compliance errors, and promote equitable design solutions that serve all occupants.

Learning Objectives

check

Determine which ADA scoping requirements apply to a new construction project based on occupancy, use, Title II or III classification, and site arrival conditions.

check

Design accessible site features—including routes, parking, ramps, and entrances—that comply with the 2010 ADA Standards during schematic design.

check

Apply ADA technical requirements to doorways, interior circulation paths, stairs, and elevators to ensure full accessibility in building design development.

check

Design restrooms, service counters, employee areas, and meeting rooms to meet ADA requirements for clearances, reach ranges, and functional usability.

check

Apply ADA and IBC requirements for accessible means of egress, signage, alarms, and areas of rescue assistance to support safe evacuation for all users.

check

Verify ADA compliance in built conditions during construction and post-occupancy and respond to accessibility deviations through documentation and coordination.

The data is in! Embodied Carbon & Code Compliance of Your Roof Assembly
Reducing the total carbon footprint of buildings is a frequent goal for designers, and the roof can be a strong contributor to that mission. Imagine if these goals can be achieved using the roof you already specify. It’s not a fantasy. This presentation will dive into the details of how you can take a code compliant roof assembly to the next level. We will share data on how the choice of materials can impact the total carbon footprint of a project, and specifically the embodied carbon. It will also show examples on ways to improve the energy efficiency of a roof assembly and the impact it has on overall building performance across all climate zones. Finally, the presentation will provide attendees with examples of how to use environmental product declarations (EPDs) and energy analysis tools to do similar evaluations for their specific projects. This session was recorded live on April 24, 2025.
