The AIA /AAH Case Study Library, led by the Research Initiatives Committee, transforms award-winning healthcare projects into a shared, practical resource - enabling design decisions that improve patient safety, clinical outcomes, and user well-being.  By standardizing and centralizing peer-reviewed case studies, it helps teams quickly identify strategies, benchmark performance, and make more confident decisions to drive smarter design and stronger outcomes across the industry. Examples will focus on how documented design strategies relate to patient safety, staff workflows, and overall user experience in healthcare settings.

Zack Chung

Zack Chung graduated from Clemson University with a Master of Architecture + Health degree. During his time at Clemson, he joined the AIA AAH committee to support their case study efforts and has remained an active member ever since. Now a Medical Planner at ZGF with two years of experience, Zack has worked on a diverse range of projects spanning from clinics to hospitals. He also plays a significant role in healthcare benchmarking and is deeply passionate about utilizing data and research to evaluate how healthcare design can improve patient safety, staff wellbeing, and the overall user experience. 

Luke Chung

Luke Chung earned a Master of Architecture + Health degree from Clemson University, where he became involved with the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH) committee, contributing to healthcare case study initiatives and continuing his active engagement with the organization today. Currently a Medical Planner at ZGF with two years of professional experience, Luke has contributed to a wide range of healthcare projects, from outpatient clinics to large-scale hospitals. His work also focuses heavily on healthcare benchmarking, driven by a strong interest in leveraging data and research to understand how healthcare design can enhance patient safety, support staff wellbeing, and improve the overall user experience.  

Mary Beth Welty

Mary Beth Welty has been an AIA/AAH Research Committee member since 2020 and helped to originate the clinic benchmarking subcommittee in 2021.  A healthcare planner with 10+ years of experience in over 80 different inpatient and outpatient departments ranging from behavioral health to ambulatory care and multiprocedural specialty clinics, she has been critical to the AIA/AAH clinic benchmarking effort.  For 9 years she has led benchmarking processes and Evidenced Based Design research efforts both within the AIA and in her role as a healthcare planner.  Mary Beth is an expert at leveraging efficiencies and software to streamline workflows and solve problems.  She is passionate about benchmarking healthcare projects because she knows that it allows our industry to better understand the data we already have by analyzing current and past spaces and using that information to help inform our future projects and is excited about the potential knowledge and ideas that benchmarking projects can provide.

Operating Room Design: Collaborations Between Academics and Professional Practice Using an Evidence-Based Design Process
As health systems increasingly focus on leveraging the facility design process to improve patient outcomes and improve staff workflow, multidisciplinary design teams comprising architects, constructors, researchers, and operators are relying on current research to inform facility design decisions.  Clemson University has engaged with health systems and architecture firms as part of a multi-year federally funded patient safety learning lab to design a safer and more ergonomic operating room. Essential Hospital Life Safety Design: Compliance with IBC and NFPA 101
Designing healthcare facilities requires a deep understanding of life safety systems that protect patients, staff, and visitors. This presentation is tailored to expand designers’ knowledge of life safety requirements and gain practical tools for integrating these critical elements into hospital and ambulatory care design. Through an exploration of passive fire protection strategies, attendees will gain clarity on the often complex and overlapping requirements found in the International Building Code (IBC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. We will look at egress requirements tailored to healthcare occupancies and explore how to approach egress planning that meets code, supports operations, and prioritizes life safety.  In addition to passive strategies, the session will address active systems, offering an overview of basic design requirements for fire alarm and sprinkler systems. Designed to be both informative and actionable, this session will equip attendees with tools to better collaborate with engineers, code consultants, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) to create projects are both compliant and safe.  This session was recorded live on July 8, 2025.

Medical Respite Care and Dignified Design: Opportunities for Creating Spaces for Healing for the Unhoused Community
Medical respite care is defined as acute and post-acute care for people experiencing homelessness who are too ill or frail to recover from a physical illness or injury on the streets, but who are not ill enough to be in a hospital. Every medical respite care program shares the same fundamental elements: a short-term, safe place to stay, allowing people experiencing homelessness an opportunity to rest, recover, and heal in a safe environment while accessing medical care and supportive services. These programs are a critical opportunity to provide safety and opportunity to connect with providers and services to address the many factors contributing to a person’s experience of homelessness. To attend to the safety and healing of end users, programs would do well to employ intentional, trauma-informed, human-centered design approaches that support the mental and physical health needs presented by this population. Dignified Design is one such approach that prioritizes the needs of individuals accessing and delivering services in medical respite settings through a clear framework of principles and practices. This webinar will provide an overview of medical respite programs, their role in communities, and how the field of architecture can contribute to these programs through a Dignified Design approach, which centers the needs of people experiencing homelessness. As climate change intensifies the frequency and severity of hurricanes, healthcare facilities in coastal regions face growing pressure to remain operational during extreme weather events.
