Dive into the work of UNA Barbara e Valentim—a São Paulo-based studio focused on enhancing public and private spaces for better collective and individual life. Discover the diverse cultural and environmental issues in the Global South and how São Paulo's architects, planners, and iconic projects have helped shape the modern architecture movement globally. 

Explore and be inspired by designs that exemplify refined materiality, climate adaptation, contemporary construction methods, and a respectful relationship with natural surroundings, with projects ranging from residential buildings to large facilities and public spaces. You’ll learn how architects in different contexts address current habitation issues and how regional design approaches are interpreted at various scales—enriching your understanding and perspective on global architecture and design.

Instructors
Fernanda Barbara

Fernanda Barbara is a Partner of UNA Barbara e Valentim Arquitetos and associate professor at Escola da Cidade. She has participated in international seminars and given lectures in cities such as Chicago, Paris, Porto, Lisbon, Querétaro, Santiago, Montevideo, La Plata and several Brazilian cities. She has been a guest lecturer on postgraduate courses: Maestria en Proyectos at the FAU of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata| Argentina since 2022, Diploma de Especialización en Investigación Proyectual FADU/UDELAR in Montevideo|Uruguay, in 2017, and, Des Mutations Urbaines at the École Speciale d’Architecture – Paris| France, in 2015.She was a member of the curatorial team for the Brazilian representation at the Venice International Biennale in 2006 and was a member of the curatorial team for the Ibero-American Biennale in 2019. She was a jury member for the SAU (Sociedad de Arquitectos del Uruguay) National Competition in 2023 and the international competition for the Lisbon Architecture Triennale – Début Award in 2016.She has been an associate professor at Escola da Cidade (since 2006), where she has coordinated various subjects and Plataforma Plus, a research laboratory on the central region of São Paulo, with architects Fréderic Druot, Camille Bianchi and sociologist José Guilherme P. Leite, based on the experience of projects by the French firm Lacaton&Vassal.
 

Craig Brandt
FAIA, AFAAR, LEED BD+C

Craig Brandt is an architect and educator based in Chicago and Chair of Programs for the AIA Committee on Design. He has guided the design and execution of collaborative public projects with a focus on sensitive adaptation and sustainability, and has participated as design critic, lecturer, and moderator internationally. His various activities promote a wide gamut of design excellence and preservation with leadership roles in the American Institute of Architects and Docomomo US. He is a member of the Society of Fellows at the American Academy of Rome, a General Services Administration (GSA) National Peer, and serves as adjunct professor at the University of Notre Dame and University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.

Susan Chin
FAIA

Susan Chin, an accomplished urbanist and civic leader, recently formed an independent consultancy DesignConnects. She led the Design Trust for Public Space, a nationally recognized New York City nonprofit organization at the forefront of shaping the public realm for over eight years. Prior to Design Trust, she was assistant commissioner for Capital Projects at NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, commissioning innovative and high performance architecture and public art citywide. She serves as AIA Committee on Design communications chair; and also served as vice president on AIA national board and chapter president of AIA New York.  Susan has chaired and served on numerous AIA committees including: Leadership Diversity Pipeline Task Force; Gold Medal/Firm Award Advisory Committee; Strategic Directions Group and Communications; EVP/CEO Search;  Women in Architecture; Component Partnerships; and Long Range Planning. She also keynoted YAF25 Summit. Her awards include: American Society of Landscape Architects Honorary Membership; AIA NY States's Kideney Gold Medal, and Del Gaudio, and The Ohio State University's Distinguished Alumna.  She currently serves on the East Midtown Governing Group and recently stepped of the NYC & Company Board of Directors.

Fábio Valentim

Partner of UNA Barbara e Valentim Arquitetos and associate professor at Escola da Cidade. Lecturer at schools in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay, USA, England, Portugal, Switzerland and many Brazilian schools. 

Guest lecturer at various workshops, such as FADU (Montevideo, 2007), Sapienza University of Rome (2014) and Universidad Mayor de Chile (Santiago, 2014). Coordinator of the SP/BsAs Workshop 2015, which brought together the University of La Plata, Colegio dos Arquitectos Districto 2 de Buenos Aires, Instituto dos Arquitetos do Brasil – São Paulo and Escola da Cidade. 

He was part of the team of curators for the Ibero-American Biennial in 2019. 

Visiting professor on the postgraduate course at the National University of La Plata, Argentina, since 2022.Associate professor at Escola da Cidade (since 2006). Coordinator of the Project VII course, teacher at Estúdio Vertical (EV) and supervisor of the Course Conclusion Work (TCC) course. Coordinator of Editora Escola da Cidade between 2016 and 2022. 

Organizer of the book Um Guia de Arquitetura de São Paulo – 12 routes and 124 projects, Editora Escola da Cidade with WMF Martins Fontes – award for best publication from IAB/SP in 2019. 

In 2008 he wrote a critical essay for the book “The City and its Margins”, by the artist Elisa Bracher, a publication awarded by the Institute of Architects of São Paulo.
